The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were stomped by the stampeding Laredo Nixon High School Mustangs 16 to 0 on Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Laredo Independent School District Shirley Field in Laredo, Texas in a non-district football game, falling to 1-2 overall in the season.
The Laredo Nixon Mustangs stout defense held the potent thundering Mavericks running game to a minimum, stopping standout Maverick running back Deion Alonso and company from reaching the end zone.
The Mavericks offense had several drives killed by penalties and fumbles, costing them the opportunity to score and punch the football into the Mustangs end zone.
The home standing Laredo Nixon Mustangs scored early in the first quarter after the Mavericks opening drive went four and punt on a 12 yard touchdown pass from standout Mustangs Quarterback Ralph Perez to wide receiver Michael Robles and the point after attempt was no good to take a 6-0 lead with 8:12 in the first period.
The Mustangs tacked on a three point field goal late in the first quarter to take a 10-0 lead with 2:28 left.
The Mavericks trailed 10-0 at halftime going into the locker room to consult their coaches on what adjustments they needed to make during the second half.
During the third and fourth quarters, both the Mavericks and Mustangs offenses played sluggish and self-inflicted themselves with penalties and fumbles killing their offensive drives. Both teams played a scoreless second half until the end of the game when Mavericks quarterback Juan Elizondo tossed a Hail Mary pass which was intercepted by Mustangs defensive back Alex Rincon who ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown leaping into the air and end zone from three yards out to score the only touchdown in the second half and giving the Mustangs the 16-0 lead with the extra point failing, securing the Mustangs 16-0 shut out victory over the visiting Mavericks.
The Laredo Nixon Mustangs won two out of two against Eagle Pass teams in 2013 having defeated the Eagle Pass Eagles 6-0 the previous week and now the C.C. Winn Mavericks 16-0.
The C. C. Winn Mavericks will regroup and now prepare next week to play the perennially tough 3A Hondo High School Owls on Friday, September 20th, at 7:30 P.M. at home in the EPISD Student Activity Center’s Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium as a final tune-up for District 29-5A football action.
