Eagle Pass soaked by heavy rainfall and flooding, more expected Tuesday & Wednesday

The City of Eagle Pass, Texas was soaked by approximately 10-12 inches of rain during late Saturday, October 12, 2013 and Sunday, October 13, 2013 causing heavy flooding in some areas of the community including Cedar Ridge, Las Quintas Fronterizas, El Indio Highway, Lewis Estates, Las Brisas, Eagle Heights, La Herradura, Barrera Street in Seco Mines, and others.
The heavy thunderstorms emanating from Mexico blowing into Texas drenched Eagle Pass and the entire Middle Rio Grande region with heavy rainfall causing flooding in Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Cotulla, Dilley, La Pryor, Asherton, and many other cities.
The Texas Department of Transportation had to close many state and national highways and farm to market roads in Southwest Texas as a result of the heavy rainfall which fell during Saturday and Sunday, October 12-13th. Farm to Market Road 1021, also known as El Indio Highway, was closed from Farm to Market Road 3443 (South Veterans Blvd.) to Lewis Street due to flooding caused by the heavy rainfall. U.S. Highway 277 South from Eagle Pass to Carrizo Springs was closed at the U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint due to flooding on the highway from the rains. Farm to Market Road 2644 from El Indio, Texas to Carrizo Springs, Texas is closed due to flooding.
Texas Highway 83 from Carrizo Springs to Crystal City is also closed due to flooding on the highway.
The City of Eagle Pass opened the Multi-Purpose Center as a human shelter for persons affected by the flooding. The City of Eagle Pass also opened its Emergency Operations Center to stay abreast and monitor the rainfall and flooding situations within the community as well as inform the public on the emergencies facing the community and which public resources are available to them.
The Carrizo Springs Independent School District cancelled classes for Monday, October 14th, due to the heavy flooding in the community and area.
The Eagle Pass Independent School District will have classes on Monday, October 14th, as no press release has been issued to the contrary.
More heavy rains are expected in Eagle Pass and Maverick County on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 15-16th, announced the National Weather Service. Residents are asked to stay informed and follow their local authorities warnings and advisories.
