Former San Antonio Spurs and NBA player, Sean Michael Elliott, was the keynote speaker at the 2013 C.C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks Basketball Team Banquet held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the C.C. Winn High School Dining Hall and Conference Room.
Elliott shared important advice with the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks Basketball Team members on how to succeed both on the court and off the court. Elliott told the Lady Mavericks that they needed to dream big and practice hard to accomplish their dreams. Elliott shared his personal experience how an athlete grows and improves every year through dedication, discipline, and practice. He cited how he went from being unable to dunk a basketball in Ninth grade and playing on the worst freshman team in Tucson, Arizona to becoming the captain of his high school team at Cholla High Magnet School, the University of Arizona Wildcats, and San Antonio Spurs through hard work and practice.
Over 150 persons attended the 2013 C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks Basketball Team Banquet which included the introduction of the players, coaches, and administration. C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks Head Basketball Coach Enrique Pang welcomed the guests and Elliott to the 2013 Banquet. C.C. Winn High School Principal Jesus Diaz-Wever also welcomed Elliott to the school and Eagle Pass and wished the Lady Mavericks a successful 2013 season.
Elliott signed autographs and took photographs with both the Lady Mavericks Basketball Team members and guests at the banquet. He received a standing ovation from a very appreciative audience and players.
Elliott starred at the University of Arizona under Head Coach Lute Olson, whom he credits for developing him as a great basketball player, and was named the John R. Wooden Award recipient, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in Basketball, in 1989. He broke Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s (Lew Alcindor) PAC 12 basketball career scoring record in 1989. He led the Arizona Wildcats to the NCAA Final Four in 1988 and was named an NCAA All-American First Team in 1988 and 1989.
Elliott was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA in 1989 and played with the Spurs during his NBA career except for one year with the Detroit Pistons. He was named to the NBA Rookie First Team in 1990, twice named an NBA All-Star, and became an NBA Champion in 1999 with the Spurs. He is best recognized for making a miracle three-point shot in the 1999 NBA Finals Championship which earned the San Antonio Spurs the championship. His number 32 jersey is retired at his high school, the University of Arizona, and the San Antonio Spurs.
