State Representative Poncho Nevárez Officially Files for Re-Election
Austin, TX — As the holiday season comes around the corner, campaigns begin to rev up their engines and prepare for the primaries. After an impressive first legislative session receiving the House Democratic Caucus’ ‘Freshman of the Year’ award, State Representative Poncho Nevárez (D-Eagle Pass) has officially filed for his re-election to serve as the State Representative of House District 74.
Nevárez greatly contributed to the 83rd legislative session by helping restore $3.9 billion to public education and reducing the number of ‘End of Course’ testing to stop children from being over tested, as well as voting to fund water strategies to tackle the drought that his district and the rest of the state are facing. He also added key language to SB 215 by returning power to public institutions of higher education when it comes to the decision of consolidating or eliminating low producing certificate or degree programs. Furthermore, he passed legislation aimed to assist veterans, as well as a bill that will ensure the protection of the elderly or disabled, who are being exploited, neglected, or abused, and allowing professional councilors to compose psychological assessments.
During this past session, he was appointed to the International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, Culture, Recreation & Tourism Committee, and the Rules & Resolutions Committee, while also serving as Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus. Rep. Nevárez was also appointed as Vice Chair of the House Energy Caucus, Eagle Ford Shale Caucus, and the Rural Caucus.
“I was proud to be able to represent HD 74 and follow in the footsteps of Congressman Gallego,” Nevárez states. “We got some things done but the work is far from done.”
