Eagle Pass native and current Associate Professor of American History at the University of North Texas at Denton, Dr. Roberto R. Calderon, has co-authored a new book entitled “Mas Alla del Rio Bravo: Breve Historia de Mexicanos del Norte de Texas” published by the Secretariat of Foreign Relations of Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. The new book is written in Spanish and is the most recent publication of the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Relations’ Diplomatic Historical Archives and The Matias Romero Institute of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations.
“Mas Alla del Rio Bravo: Breve Historia de Mexicanos del Norte de Texas” is an important contribution to the history of Mexicans in the United States of America, particularly in Texas. Dr. Calderon and his co-author, Dr. Manuel Garcia y Greigo, document the arrival and growth of the Mexican community in North Texas since the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the United States and Mexico, including the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Metropolitan Area and the four North Texas counties of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, and Collin. Drs. Calderon and Garcia y Greigo describe the history of racial, political, and educational relations between Mexicans, Anglo-Saxons, and African-Americans in North Texas from 1848 to the present.
The new book on the brief history of Mexicans in North Texas also documents the past and present experience of the Mexican immigrant community in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and explores the future of the Mexican immigrant population in the four North Texas counties of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, and Collin. The book is an important contribution to understanding the Mexican immigrant community in the United States.
