Born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico and educated at Eagle Pass High School, where he graduated as Valedictorian, Hector de Jesus Ruiz went on to become one of the leading computer technology microchip executives in the world at Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., also known as AMD, will return to Eagle Pass, Texas on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at 5:30 P.M. at Commissioners Courtroom, located at 500 Quarry Street, to speak at a Book-Signing ceremony hosted by the Library Foundation of the City of Eagle Pass Public Library, announced David J. Castaneda.
Dr. Ruiz earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968 and 1970 and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Rice University in 1973.
Dr. Ruiz rose to world-class fame by becoming the President, Chief Executive Officer, and later Chairman of the Board of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. in early 2000s. Dr. Ruiz led AMD to design and manufacture computer microchips superior to its larger, global rival, Intel, during 2003 to 2006, sparking a fierce competition between the two microchip makers. Dr. Ruiz led AMD to file an antitrust lawsuit against competitor Intel alleging anticompetitive acts and antitrust violations. In 2009, AMD settled its antitrust lawsuit against Intel with Intel agreeing to pay $1.25 Billion to AMD without admitting any violations of anticompetitive acts.
Dr. Ruiz wrote a scintillating book, titled “Slingshot: AMD’s Fight To Free An Industry From The Ruthless Grip of Intel,” detailing the legal fight between the computer microchip giant Intel and the upstart, innovative competitor AMD and the battle between the two companies for market share of whose microchips would power the next generation of computers in the world, as well as describe his humble upbringing in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico and Eagle Pass, Texas.
Former First Lady Laura Bush, Charles Matthews, Melinda Perrin, Julius Glickman, Admiral William H. McRaven, and Dr. Hector de Jesus Ruiz were named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Ruiz resigned as CEO of AMD on July 18, 2008, and was named Chairman of AMD spin-off Global Foundries in March 2009. He is now Chairman and CEO of Advanced Nanotechnology Solutions, Inc. and is very active in writing and developing the next generation of computer microchip executives.
The Book-Signing ceremony on Tuesday, November 19th, at 5:30 P.M. at Commissioners Courtroom is open to the public. Copies of Dr. Ruiz’s Slingshot book will be available for sale and personally autographed at the Book-Signing ceremony hosted by the Eagle Pass Public Library Foundation.
