The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department was awarded the County Essentials Grant through the Office of the Governor of Texas for the amount of $150,000 in 2013 for the purpose of developing a law enforcement and border security strategic plan As of late November 2013, the strategic plan study has been completed by the Hunter-Wimberley Group and is ready to be implemented into the daily functions of the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department, announced Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced that the strategic plan devised by the Hunter-Wimberley Group was presented to him and his department in late November and they are in the process of studying the strategic plan to begin its implementation.
“ As of this moment we are looking into the overall strategic plan and its implementation into the daily functions of the Maverick County Sheriff Department. The Strategic action plan will focus in on the overall functioning of the department and also emphasizes sound policies and overhauling outdated policies as well. It also focuses on jail standard policies to assure a better functioning system though-out the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department. This new strategic plan also entails an evaluation system for all employees in the Sheriff’s Department which will assist us in assessing individual performances within our department. This new Strategic Action Plan will be implemented starting the new year,” said Sheriff Schmerber.
Sheriff Schmerber stated that the department was in great need of this strategic plan due to the rapid population growth in the community. “The county is expanding and that indeed creates a larger workload for the department,” added Sheriff Schmerber.
Some important objectives this plan will focus on will be to reduce the impact of organized crime, reduce the threat of terrorism, apprehend high threat criminals, improve road and highway safety, emergency management, border security, and jail management.
