Christmas-eve Armed Assailant Arrested by Maverick County Sheriff’s Department

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced that Ernesto Alonso Fuentes was arrested on Tuesday, January 7, 2013, at approximately 1:30 P.M. by Maverick County Sheriff Deputies and charged with assault with a deadly weapon of Eagle Passan Juan Sanchez on December 24, 2013, after shooting him in the chest with an alleged .38 Caliber handgun during a family dispute on Mesquite Street in Chula Vista Subdivision in southern Maverick County on Christmas-eve.
Ernesto Alonso Fuentes is currently detained at the Tom Bowles Law Enforcement Center and is awaiting to be magistrated by a Maverick County Justice of the Peace. Fuentes allegedly shot Juan Sanchez in the chest with a gun during a dispute between two families while Sanchez was celebrating Christmas-eve with his family. Sanchez was struck by one bullet in the chest which entered and exited his body. Sanchez was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment and later flown to a San Antonio, Texas hospital for surgery arising from the bullet wound.
Sheriff Schmerber stated that Ernesto Alonso Fuentes made a statement to Maverick County Sheriff Department Detectives regarding the alleged shooting incident on December 24th and is awaiting to be magistrated by a Maverick County Justice of the Peace.
Sheriff Schmerber stated that all persons with concealed handgun permits need to abide by state laws regarding concealed handguns and must use weapons responsibly and lawfully. The case is under investigation by the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department Detective Division.
