Two 18 Wheelers Head-On Collision injures drivers and closes Highway 57 South for 5 Hours

Two 18 Wheeler Tractor-Trailers were involved in a dramatic head-on collision on U.S. Highway 57 South approximately eight miles past the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Maverick County, Texas at approximately 3 A.M. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, injuring the drivers of each tractor-trailer and causing Highway 57 South to be closed for a little more than five hours, announced the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The two tractor-trailer drivers were transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in Eagle Pass, Texas to be treated for injuries sustained in the head-on collision. U.S. Highway 57 South was a mess said one traveler passing by the scene of the accident, causing Highway 57 South to be closed by law enforcement authorities for slightly more than five hours as Maverick County Sheriff Department Deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers, Eagle Pass Fire Department EMS, and local tow trucks investigated the accident, rendered aid and cleared and cleaned the accident scene.
The traveling public were rerouted through the Old Uvalde Highway (FM 481) for traveling purposes, particularly traffic traveling to and from Eagle Pass and San Antonio and vice-versa. U.S. Highway 57 South was finally opened shortly after 8 A.M. for the general traveling traffic and public.
The two injured truck drivers have been identified as Jesus Monterubio Navarro of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico and Cristobal Nunez, also of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. Jesus Monterubio Navarro was the driver of a 1992 Freightliner tractor-trailer while Cristobal Nunez was driving a 2000 Freightliner. As of press time, it is unknown which driver was traveling west towards Eagle Pass and who was traveling east towards San Antonio and which driver may have been negligent in causing the accident.
The accident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
