Eagle Pass Lady Eagles stampede C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks 5-3 in District Softball Clash

Eagle Pass softball fans witnessed another exciting and thrilling game between the Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles and C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the EPISD Student Activity Center Softball Field as the Lady Eagles rallied for five runs in the second inning to defeat the visiting Lady Mavericks 5-3 in an important District 29-5A clash between the two local schools.
Eagle Pass Lady Eagles standout southpaw pitcher Krystal De La Cruz hurled seven innings allowing four hits, five strikeouts, one bases on balls, one hit batsman, and three runs to earn the hard-fought victory. Lady Mavericks standout sophomore right hand hurler Amberly
Garza allowed four hits, five walks, three hit batsmen, and five runs in taking the loss. Both pitchers performed very well, respectively.
The Lady Eagles exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning as designated hitter Dariela Velasquez led off with a bases on balls to reach first base and Miryam Salinas came in to pinch-run for Velasquez and swiftly stole second base, Krystal De La Cruz slammed an RBI double to right center field scoring Salinas and Sairah Gonzalez came in to run for De La Cruz, Monica Flores grounded out, Samantha Fuentes reached first base on a walk, Vivian Ramirez reached first base on a fielder’s choice advancing Fuentes to second base while Gonzalez was out at third base, Sandra Mendoza was hit by a pitch to get on first base, and Krystal Perez belted an RBI single to left field scoring Fuentes and advancing Ramirez to third base and Sandra Mendoza to second base, Ramirez scored on the throw-in and Sandra Mendoza advanced to third base, Perez advanced to second base on the throw, Monica Flores stroked an RBI single to left field scoring Sandra Mendoza and Perez advanced to third base while Flores went to second base on the throw, and Melanie Mendoza flied out to end the five run rally, giving the Lady Eagles a commanding 5-0 lead which they never relinquished.
The Lady Mavericks rallied for one run in the top of the third inning as Alyssa Lopez reached first base on an error and advanced to third base on the throwing error, Cassandra Flores grounded out to third base but not before Lopez slided below the tag of Lady Eagle catcher Claudia Cruz at home plate to score the lone Lady Maverick run in the inning, narrowing the score 5-1 in favor of the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Mavericks added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on a leadoff single by Ronnie Valdez, Lorena Sanchez reached first base on an error advancing Valdez to second base, Natalie Garcia crushed a fastball for a two RBI single to right field scoring Valdez and Sanchez to narrow the score 5-3. The Lady Mavericks had bases loaded with one out but Lady Eagle hurler Krystal De La Cruz struck out the last two Lady Mavericks batters looking to end the Lady Mavericks threat to score more runs and possibly tie the game or take the lead.
After the fourth inning, both pitchers De La Cruz and Garza settled down and kept each team from scoring any additional runs to make a final score of 5-3 in favor of the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles improve to 21-4 overall in the season and 6-0 in District 29-5A while the Lady Mavericks fall to 13-11 overall in the season and 2-4 in District 29-5A play.
Both the Lady Eagles and Lady Mavericks played their hearts out and represented Eagle Pass extremely well, adding another chapter to the historic softball series between the two local schools.
