C.C. Winn Counselor Receives Honor from Texas Tech
Maria Uriegas, college advisor at C.C. Winn High School in Eagle Pass, has been honored with the Excellence in College Admission Counseling Award given by Texas Tech University’s Office of Admissions.
Uriegas was presented with the award Monday (March 24) at C.C. Winn High School.
The award is chosen among college advising professionals who demonstrate actions of going above and beyond to create access to higher education for students; support Texas Tech’s efforts to increase enrollment, increase diversity and promote student success; and participate in Texas Tech recruitment programming.
“Working with Maria Uriegas has been an absolute honor as she is a leader among college counseling professionals,” said Jamie Hansard, director of recruitment and marketing for Texas Tech Undergraduate Admissions. “Her dedication to her students is awe-inspiring and Texas Tech wanted to recognize her contributions to these young students’ lives.”
According to the selection committee, Uriegas was chosen as the recipient for the award based on her emphasis in understanding the programs offered by Texas Tech so she is able to better inform her students about the excellent opportunities available to her students at Texas Tech. She has participated in counselor development programs such as Summer Showcase and attends Texas Tech’s annual counselor update.
Mrs. Uriegas demonstrates a persistent attitude about exposing C.C. Winn High School students to colleges and universities like Texas Tech by facilitating an annual bus trip to the Texas Tech campus. She has consistently travelled with her students to Lubbock each fall so the students can see firsthand the many excellent academic opportunities that are available. She has facilitated the opportunity for her students to experience a Texas Tech football game during their visit so that they can experience campus life and the fun aspects of college as well.
