C. C. Winn Mavericks lassoed by San Antonio Southside Cardinals 34-7

The thundering C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were lassoed by the visiting San Antonio Southside High School Cardinals 34-7 in their inaugural District 29-5A football game on Friday, September 26, 2014, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, falling to 1-3 overall in the 2014 season and 0-1 in District 29-5A.
The Mavericks won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick-off. The Mavericks started at their own 18 yard line but were forced to turn the ball over in Cardinals territory.
The visiting Cardinals marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium turf on their first possession for a touchdown on a five yard run by standout tailback Matthew Collier and their two point conversion attempt failed, giving the Cardinals an early 6-0 lead with 5:11 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Mavericks went three and out punting to the Cardinals on their second possession. The football touched the back of a Cardinals player and of the Mavericks recovered the ball at the Cardinals 42 yard line with 3:34 minutes left in the first period.
The Mavericks were unable to capitalize on the fumble recovery and punted the football back to the Cardinals.
The teams exchanged possessions late in the first quarter with both defenses stopping each other offenses.
Early in the second quarter, the Mavericks had possession of the football but fumbled the ball and an alert Cardinal pounced on the ball and recovered it. The Cardinals engineered a short touchdown drive culminating on a nine yard touchdown keeper by Cardinal quarterback Johnny Trevino and the two point conversion attempt was no good, increasing the Cardinals lead 12-0 with 4:59 minutes remaining in the second period.
The Mavericks received possession of the football but were forced to punt it back to the Cardinals. Cardinals punt returner Brandon Herrera raced down the sideline for 49 yards for a punt return touchdown and the extra point attempt was good, extending the Cardinals lead 19-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals continued their ground attack pounding the Mavericks defense for two additional touchdowns in the third quarter, including a two yard touchdown run by standout quarterback Jonathan Trevino followed by a two point conversion and another one yard touchdown keeper by Jonathan Trevino and the point after attempt was good resulting in an insurmountable lead of 34-0 before the Mavericks could get on the scoreboard.
Late in the third-quarter, the Mavericks orchestrated a textbook touchdown drive marching down the field culminating in a six yard end around run by Mavericks wide receiver Ramiro Valdez and place kicker Dante Valdez’s point after attempt was good, narrowing the score 34-7 with 47 seconds remaining in the third-quarter.
The Mavericks recovered the ensuing kick-off after a Cardinal fumbled the football at their own 20 yard line. The Mavericks were unable to capitalize on the fumble recovery deep in Cardinals territory, resulting in an interception of Mavericks quarterback Juan Elizondo’s pass by Cardinal safety Brandon Herrera during early in the fourth period with 11:07 minutes remaining.
The Mavericks recovered a Cardinals fumble but were unable to score mid-way through the fourth quarter. The Cardinals defense stifled the explosive Mavericks ground game of tailback Deion Alonso, Chris Aranda, and Juan Elizondo throughout the game to earn the 34-7 victory.
The Mavericks next play the always tough Medina Valley High School Panthers on Friday,October 3, 2014, at 7:30 P.M. at Castroville,Texas in a District 29-5A game.
