Eagle Pass Eagles blazed by San Antonio Southwest Dragons 54-44

The Eagle Pass High School Eagles were blazed by the San Antonio Southwest High School Dragons in a high scoring Shootout at Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium 54-44 on Thursday, September 25, 2014, in Eagle Pass, Texas, falling to 3-2 overall in the season.
The Eagles and the Dragons battled it out for four quarters in the highest scoring football game to date at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles took the opening kick-off and immediately surprised the Dragons with a trick wingback option pass from standout Eagles wingback DeShawn Franklin to standout quarterback Ty Chisum resulting in a 72 yards touchdown pass and place kicker Gonzalo Martinez point after attempt was good to give the Eagles an early lead 7-0 with 9:22 remaining in the first period.
The Dragons took the ensuing kick-off and engineered a touchdown drive of their own utilizing their ground game culminating in a three yard touchdown run by standout tailback Jonathan Cruz and the extra point was good, tying the game at 7-7 a piece with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagles received the kick-off and orchestrated a touchdown drive against the Dragons defense, resulting in a 16 yards touchdown pass from Ty Chisum to wingback DeShawn Franklin and the point after attempt was good, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead with 6:05 minutes left in the first period.
The Dragons reciprocated the favor and marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium turf with a touchdown drive of their own, culminating in a three yard scamper by tailback Jonathan Cruz and the extra point was good, tying the score 14-14 each.
In the second quarter, the Eagles took the ensuing kick-off but had to punt the football to the Dragons. The Dragons wasted no time as they marched down the field for another textbook touchdown drive resulting in a three yard run into the end zone by reserve tailback Reilly Riggs and the point after attempt was good, taking a 21-14 lead with 9:19 left in the second stanza.
The Eagles answered the Dragons with a 70 yard touchdown drive of their own culminating in a four yard keeper by Eagles quarterback Ty Chisum and the extra point was good, tying the scoreboard 21-21 with 8:12 minutes remaining in the second period.
The Eagles stingy defense held the Dragons on their next possession, forcing a punt. The Eagles explosive offensive machine engineered a patented touchdown drive resulting in a four yard keeper by quarterback Ty Chisum and the extra point was good, giving the Eagles a 28-21 lead with 3:38 left before halftime.
The Dragons reciprocated the Eagles offense on the ensuring possession with a touchdown drive of their own culminating in a dazzling 68 yard sprint into the end zone by running back Jonathan Cruz and the point after attempt was good, tying the score 28-28 with 2:29 left before halftime.
The Eagles marched right back down the field on the ensuing possession getting to the Dragons 14 yard line but the drive ended on an interception of a Ty Chisum pass with five seconds left in the second period, denying the Eagles a touchdown or field goal and the lead at halftime. The teams tied at halftime 28-28.
In the second half, the Eagles and Dragons continued matching each other touchdown for touchdown until late in the fourth quarter when a pair of Eagles defensive penalties provided momentum to the Dragons to score the winning touchdowns.
The Eagles scored another two touchdowns and two two point conversions in the second half, including a 14 yard touchdown run by quarterback Ty Chisum and a sensational 67 yard touchdown run by standout running back Mark Venegas.
Meanwhile, the Dragons scored four touchdowns in the second half to earn the hard-fought non-district game victory over the Eagles.
The Eagles are open this week and will not play until next week against the Laredo United South High School Panthers on Thursday, October 9th, at 7:00 P.M. at home in the confines of EPISD Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
