Eagle Pass Eagles fall to San Antonio John Jay Mustangs 65-47

The Eagle Pass High School Eagles fell to the San Antonio John Jay High School Mustangs 65-47 in a non-district football game on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Gustafson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, suffering their first loss of the season (3-1).
The Eagles and Mustangs engaged in a high scoring game with both teams’ offenses dominating the defenses on this evening.
The Mustangs received the opening kick-off and marched down the field for a touchdown on a 24 yard pass from standout quarterback Moses Reynolds to running back Juan Ortega and the Mustangs’ two point attempt was good to give the Mustangs an early 8-0 lead.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Eagles engineered a drive of their own culminating in a 15 yard touchdown keeper by standout quarterback Ty Chisum and the point after attempt by place kicker Gonzalo Martinez was good, narrowing the score 8-7 in favor of the Mustangs.
The Mustangs responded with a quick touchdown on their next possession on a 70 yard touchdown sprint by quarterback Moses Reynolds into the Eagles end zone and their two point attempt was good, extending the Mustangs lead 16-8 midway in the first period.
The Mustangs recovered an onside kick and quickly marched down the Gustafson Stadium turf for another touchdown on a one yard keeper by quarterback Moses Reynolds but their two point attempt failed, increasing the lead 22-7in the first quarter.
The never say die Eagles responded with a touchdown drive on their next possession culminating on a 40 yard dazzling run by standout running back Mark Venegas but the Eagles extra point attempt was no good, narrowing the score 22-13 in the first period.
The high octane Pony Express offense quickly scored on their next possession on another long sensational run by quarterback Moses Reynolds but their two point attempt was intercepted by the Eagles, extending the Mustangs lead 28-13 still in the first quarter.
The mighty Eagles offense returned the favor and engineered a long touchdown drive on their next possession culminating in a 15 yard pass from quarterback Ty Chisum to running back Mark Venegas and the point after attempt was good, making the score 28-20 at the end of the first quarter in favor of the Mustangs.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs orchestrated another touchdown drive resulting in another Moses Reynolds 10 yard keeper into the end zone but their extra point attempt failed, increasing their lead 34-20.
The Eagles bounced back with a quick and long touchdown drive of their own culminating on a beautiful 50 yard aerial pass from Ty Chisum to standout wide receiver Jose Reyes and the extra point attempt was good, narrowing the score 34-27 in the second period.
The Eagles fumbled the football on their next possession with the high flying Mustangs defense scooping up the ball deep in Eagles territory. The explosive Mustangs offense quickly capitalized on the Eagles turnover and scored another touchdown by their speedy and swift-footed quarterback Moses Reynolds and their two point attempt was good, giving the Mustangs a 42-27 lead midway in the second quarter.
The Eagles suffered a second fumble on the following possession with the lightning quick Mustangs recovering the ball deep in Eagles territory again.
The Eagles defense limited the Mustangs offense to only a field goal, giving the Mustangs a 45-27 lead at half-time.
During half-time, the Eagles coaching staff regrouped the Eagles and made defensive adjustments to answer the potent Mustangs quarterback Moses Reynolds and running game.
In the second-half, the high octane Pony Express offense padded their lead with 20 additional points while the Eagles matched the Mustangs’ 20 points on three touchdowns and two extra points to fall to the stampeding Mustangs 65-47 in the non-district football game in San Antonio.
The Eagles fall to 3-1 overall in the season and will next play the San Antonio Southwest High School Dragons in another non-district game on Thursday, September 25, 2014, 7:00 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium on Parents Night
