The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were pounced by the home standing Medina Valley High School Panthers 14-7 in a District 29-5A football game on Friday, October 3, 2014, in Castroville, Texas, as the Mavericks second half rally fell short at the Panthers two yard line as time expired with a potential game tying or winning drive. The Mavericks fall to 1-4 overall in the season and 0-2 in District 29-5A standings.
The Mavericks took the game’s opening kick-off but the stout Panthers defense stymied the Mavericks ground attack of running backs Deion Alonso and Chris Aranda and quarterback Juan Elizondo, forcing them to punt.
The Panthers engineered a 69 yards touchdown drive marching down the field of Panther Stadium, culminating in a two yard touchdown run by Panther quarterback Bradley Griggs and the point after attempt was good to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The Mavericks next possession resulted in a turnover as the Panthers recovered a Mavericks fumble deep in Panthers territory, denying the Mavericks a scoring opportunity.
In the second quarter, the Panthers capitalized on another Mavericks turnover as the Mavericks fumbled a punt return and the Panthers pounced on the football at the Mavericks 23 yard line. The Panthers ground attack pounded the Mavericks defense until they successfully pounded into the end zone on a one yard touchdown run by tailback Kristian Williams and the extra point was good, giving the Panthers a 14-0 lead in the second period.
During halftime, the Mavericks coaching crew made adjustments both in offense and defense to respond to the Panthers game plan.
After forcing the Panthers offense to punt in their first third quarter possession, the thundering Mavericks offense responded with a 72 yard touchdown drive resulting in standout Mavericks quarterback scoring on a four yard run and place kicker Dante Valdez point after attempt was good, narrowing the score 14-7 in the third quarter.
Both teams defenses dominated during the second half until the Mavericks engineered an impressive game tying drive starting at their four yard line and marching all the way down to the Panthers two yard line with time expiring, giving the Panthers the hard-fought victory against the Mavericks 14-7 in a critical District 29-5A football game.
The Mavericks will regroup and next play the perennially tough Uvalde High School Coyotes on Friday, October 10, 2014, at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in another key District 29-5A football game. Come on out and support the Mavericks to victory. Go Mavericks!
