Newly-elected United States House of Representative Will Hurd (TX-23, R) visited Eagle Pass and Maverick County, Texas to greet and meet his new constituents and to learn about the important issues to Maverick Countians at an early 8 A.M. reception on Friday, December 5, 2014, at IBC Bank, hosted by the Maverick County Republican Party, IBC Bank, and the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce.
Hurd is a member of the Republican Party and resides in San Antonio, Texas. He was elected on Tuesday, November 4th, by upsetting Democratic Party incumbent U.S. House of Representative Pete P. Gallego of Alpine, Texas. He is the first African-American Republican elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the State of Texas. He is a former undercover intelligence officer at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
IBC Bank-Eagle Pass President and Chief Executive Officer Hector J. Cerna welcomed Congressman-elect Will Hurd to Maverick County and introduced him to the over 40 persons in attendance at the reception. Cerna stated that IBC Bank welcomed Hurd to Eagle Pass and look forward to working with him.
Hurd thanked Cerna and IBC Bank, the Maverick County Republican Party, and the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce for hosting the reception in his honor and provided a brief personal history of himself. Hurd stated that he was very excited to have received support in Maverick County and look forward to being everyone’s U.S. House of Representative. He stated that he wanted to be a Representative instead of a Congressman so that he can help govern the United States in Washington, D.C. and represent the diverse people of the 23rd Congressional District in Texas.
Hurd announced that he officially takes office on January 6, 2015 and has been appointed to the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee and the Government and Reform Committee. “The biggest issue that I have heard during the last 19 months and this tour is homeland security.” said Hurd. Hurd noted that he plans to invite the 59 new U.S. House of Representatives to the U.S.-Mexico border so that they can learn and understand the U.S.-Mexico border and homeland security issues firsthand. Hurd stated that the Government and Reform Committee is the one responsible for the investigations of the Internal Revenue Service and the Benghazi Embassy. He stated that he plans to keep an office open in Eagle Pass at the same location as Congressman Pete P. Gallego, which is at the Eagle Pass City Hall located at 100 South Monroe Street.
Following his brief introduction, Hurd fielded questions from the public in attendance at the reception and personally greeted every one of the attendees, stopping to have his photograph taken with guests.
