United States Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, Julian Castro, visited the Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville (HACB) in Brownsville, Texas on December 14, 2014, to promote enrollment in the Affordable Care Act among public housing tenants, announced Eagle Passan Carla Y. Mancha-Juarez, Executive Director of the HACB.
Public housing and health care are interrelated, said Mancha-Juarez. Public housing leadership is now focusing on collaborative partnerships with local governmental entities and private businesses in developing increased public housing and a healthier community through enrollment in the Affordable Care Act.
Secretary Castro visited only three public housing authorities from within the San Antonio HUD regional office. The City of Brownsville and the HACB welcomed Secretary Castro to the Rio Grande Valley on his mission to increase enrollment in the Affordable Care Act among public housing tenants.
Accompanying Secretary Castro to Brownsville was HUD Regional Administrator Tammye Treviño from the Fort Worth, Texas regional office and San Antonio HUD Field Office Director, Richard Lopez.
Recently, the HACB has received multi-million dollar grants from HUD to increase the number of public housing units in Brownsville, spurring economic development in housing and real estate.
Mancha-Juarez is originally from Eagle Pass and is the daughter of Tere and Arturo Mancha.
