An Eagle Pass woman, Araceli Flores, was brutally attacked by her husband, Luis Flores, age 45, with a box-cutter knife on her two eyes and body on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, during an argument which ensued while driving in their Ford Pick-up Truck on Loop 480 in Eagle Pass, Texas, causing her to be transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center and later transferred to a San Antonio, Texas hospital for specialty medical treatment.
According to Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber, Araceli Flores has lost her eyesight in one eye while the second eye underwent surgery and may possibly recover her vision in the future.
According to the preliminary investigation, Flores stopped his Ford Pick-up Truck on Loop 480 and took his estranged wife to the brush by the side of the road and began to attack her with the box-cutter knife.
Domestic violence is prevalent and widespread in Maverick County. The Eagle Pass Business Journal has previously reported about the significant problem facing Eagle Pass and Maverick County women concerning domestic violence and the need for law enforcement and the legal system to handle these rising domestic violence cases in the community.
Luis Flores was arrested and detained at the Tom Bowles Maverick County Law Enforcement Center (detention center) by Maverick County Sheriff Deputies after receiving an emergency telephone call.
The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case, said Maverick County Chief Deputy Rick Fuentes.
Maverick County Justice of the Peace of Precinct 2 Dora Madera visited Flores at the Tom Bowles Detention Center and advised him of the criminal charges which he faces and his constitutional rights and decided to take under advisement whether to give Flores a bond in the immediate future. Without a Bond yet set by Judge Madera, Flores remains detained at the Tom Bowles Detention Center.
