El Indio Highway Overpass Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held February 2nd

The Texas Department of Transportation, Laredo District Office, teamed with the City of Eagle Pass and County of Maverick in celebrating the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new and fully operational El Indio Highway Overpass in Eagle Pass, Texas on Monday, February 2, 2015.
Texas Department of Transportation Laredo District Administrator Melisa D. Montemayor welcomed local dignitaries, El Indio Highway residents, and guests to the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Montemayor stated that the El Indio Highway Overpass was completed at a cost of $12.3 Million dollars, 80% of these funds came from the United States government and 20% from the State of Texas.
Montemayor thanked the residents of El Indio Highway who supported the Overpass project and collaborated with TXDOT in the condemnation of their real properties or parts of their properties to make this important and much needed Overpass project a reality as well as former Stewart Title Manager Nena Castillon for her invaluable assistance in title research and escrow services in completing the acquisition process of needed properties for the project. Montemayor also thanked both the TXDOT Laredo and Eagle Pass District Offices’ staff in completing the El Indio Highway Overpass project from start to finish.
Montemayor introduced Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu to guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Cantu stated that the City of Eagle Pass thanks TXDOT and the residents of El Indio Highway for making this much needed Overpass project a reality for the community. Mayor Cantu noted the new El Indio Highway Overpass has significantly improved traffic in Eagle Pass since its opening in late 2014.
Montemayor also introduced Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo at the ceremony. County Judge Saucedo thanked Montemayor and her TXDOT Laredo District Office for their dedication and commitment in completing the El Indio Highway Overpass project. Judge Saucedo noted that Maverick County stands ready to work with TXDOT in getting other important transportation projects in Maverick County completed in the immediate future.
Local public dignitaries attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Maverick County Commissioners Roberto Ruiz and Rosy Cantu, Eagle Pass City Councilwoman Gloria E. Hernandez, Texas State Representative Poncho Nevarez’s Eagle Pass Office Field Representative Joe Ornelas, and Maverick County Human Resources Director Jesus Sanchez. Eagle Pass TXDOT Office Manager Celestino Hernandez also attended the ceremony.
The El Indio Highway Overpass is the third overpass constructed in Eagle Pass to assist local and out-of-town motorists to cross the Union Pacific Railroad tracks when trains are operating within the City of Eagle Pass. Local first responders, law enforcement agencies, and medical emergency services are now available to access a third overpass in responding to emergency calls. International travelers using both City of Eagle Pass International Bridges also have a new overpass to easily travel to and from the United States and Mexico.
