Maverick County Youth Wins Calf Scramble at Rodeo
San Antonio –The calf scramble was held February 15-17, 2015, at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
4-H and FFA youth competed for $800 certificates to purchase breeding animals to exhibit in the 2016 San Antonio Junior Livestock Show. Twelve certificates were awarded that evening to those who caught a calf.
Three students from Eagle Pass, Texas, were fortunate enough to catch a calf and each receive a certificate. Chalo Martinez, Shiloh Morales, and Zacarias Molina are all members of Eagle Pass FFA and entered the scramble at the suggestion of their ag teacher.
While Zacarias hopes to begin looking for his breeding animal, Martinez said he knows he will be showing a goat with the money from his certificate. Shiloh enjoys riding horses and golfing, and Zacarias enjoys showing sheep, raising goats, and playing baseball.
Alexis de la Garza from Eagle Pass, Texas, was fortunate enough to catch a calf and receive a certificate. A member of Eagle Pass FFA, de la Garza learned of the event by watching her older brother compete in years prior.
De la Garza enjoys barrel racing, and participating in both 4H and FFA. She said she’s looking forward to purchase a breeding gilt for next year’s show, and her favorite part of this year’s San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo was competing in the Calf Scramble.
Orlando Molina from Eagle Pass, Texas, was fortunate enough to catch a calf and receive a certificate. A member of Southside 4-H, he said he was glad to have caught.
Molina enjoys showing livestock, and playing baseball and football, and plans to attend Texas A&M after high school.
