Men’s Health Month is celebrated across the United States during each June with screenings, health fairs, and other health education and outreach activities aimed at bringing awareness to men on the importance of health and medical annual checkups. Preventive medicine is the best medicine for men and women. All men in the United States, including Maverick County, are encouraged to get their annual wellness checkups or exams with their primary physician.
The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and illnesses.
Men need to see their personal physician on an annual basis minimally to get preventive health care exams. The most common men’s illnesses in Maverick County include diabetes, cancer, prostate, high blood pressure, cardio-pulmonary and respiratory diseases, high cholesterol levels, cardiology, and obesity.
“Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue.
Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue,” said former Congressman Bill Richardson of New Mexico.
It is estimated that there are approximately 32,000 males living in Maverick County.
