C. C. Winn Mavericks stampeded by Laredo Nixon Mustangs 21-6

The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were stampeded by the Laredo Nixon High School Mustangs 21-6 in a key District 29-5A football game on Friday, October 30, 2015, at Laredo Independent School District Shirley Field in Laredo, Texas, falling to 4-5 overall in the season and 3-3 in District 29-5A standings.
With a possible state playoff berth on the line, the Laredo Nixon Mustangs dominated the visiting C. C. Winn Mavericks both on offense and defense to earn a hard-fought District 29-5A victory.
The Mustangs trio of fleet running backs alternated all game in carrying the pigskin into the promised land. The Mustangs struck first in the game on a 59 yard touchdown drive after an interception of a Maverick pass with running back Rene Alvarado punching the ball in the end zone on a one yard plunge with 5:28 minutes remaining in the first quarter and the point after attempt was good to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Mustangs defense stifled the potent Mavericks offense throughout the game, grabbing two interceptions of Maverick passes in the first period to stop two drives.
The Mavericks defense stopped the lethal Mustangs ground game on a fourth down and six yards at the Winn 22 yard line early in the second quarter to deny the Mustangs a score.
The Mustangs bounced back and tallied a six yard touchdown run by running back Rolando Galvan on their next possession and the extra point was good to take a 14-0 lead with 5:48 minutes left in the second quarter.
The stingy Mustangs defense suffocated the explosive Mavericks offense on their next drive, forcing the Mavericks to punt the football.
The homestanding Mustangs engineered a patented 94 yards touchdown drive culiminating on a six yard touchdown keeper by quarterback Danny Ledezma and the point after attempt sailed through the uprights, giving the Mustangs a commanding 21-0 lead with 3:32 minutes remaining in the first half.
The second half was a defensive battle between the Mavericks and Mustangs until late in the fourth quarter when the Mavericks orchestrated a touchdown drive resulting in a nine yard touchdown pass from quarterback Reyes Lopez to wide receiver Julio Ruiz and the extra point failed, narrowing the score 21-6 in favor of the Mustangs with only 3:03 minutes remaining in the game.
The Mustangs hung on to prevail over the Mavericks by a final score of 21-6, earning a key win in District 29-5A.
The Mavericks play next week against the District 29-5A leading Somerset Bulldogs on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at home, needing a must win to have an outside chance of qualifying for the state playoffs for the fist time in school history. The District 29-5A four state playoff berths will not be decided until next week, the final week of the regular season.
