Former Zavala County Sheriff Jose Z. Serna of Crystal City, Texas passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in Eagle Pass, Texas at the age of 85. Mr. Serna was born on December 2, 1929 in Crystal City, Texas and was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Angelita Zavala Serna; his late wife, Olivia Coronado Serna (married for 54 years); his sister, Maria Ortiz; and his brother, Robert Serna. He is survived by his daughters, Olivia Serna Cervera and Diana Serna Aguilera; and his sons, Jose Serna Jr. (Joe) Crystal City, Texas, Roberto Serna, 293rd Judicial District Attorney in Eagle Pass, Texas, Mario Alberto Serna, Eduardo Serna; and his brothers, Jesse Z. Serna, Louis T. Serna, Hector Serna; and his sisters, Flora Medellin, Maria Espinola, Lupe Garza, Minnie Montalvo, Aurora Serna. Mr. Serna is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Sheriff Serna was highly regarded and respected both in Zavala County and the State of Texas as a distinguished law enforcement officer, husband, father, and family member.
