IBC Bank’s Maverickville Minitropolis Radio Station Kicks Off
EAGLE PASS, TEXAS – IBC Bank’s Maverickville Minitropolis® kicks off its in-school radio station, KMAV, with real-world training at Eagle Pass’s KINL / KEPS. Ray H. Darr Elementary students participate in the IBC Bank Minitropolis® program, which functions as a city within a school, throughout the school year as part of its financial literacy curriculum.
Most recently students interviewed for radio station positions with Maverickville Minitropolis® partner radio station, KINL / KEPS, staff and station manager, Martha Garcia. As part of the interview, students were asked to audition for on-air positions by reading a segment on bullying.
Students hired for Maverickville’s KMAV include:
- Nathan Hurtado, manager, grade six
- Haide Chavez, news director, grade four
- Jose Luis Martinez, news director, grade four
- Nayeli E. Baltazar, DJ, grade four
- Pablo Barrientos, DJ, grade six
- Fernando Chacon, DJ, grade six
After the students were hired, they visited KINL / KEPS to learn how to run a radio station. During the visit they were given a tour and participated in the morning show. KINL / KEPS will continue to train its new hires so they can make school announcements, give birthday shout outs and record the news.
KMAV radio staff will manage their own station within the school, including selling ads and birthday shout outs to earn Maverick Bucks, the currency of Maverickville.
IBC Bank-Eagle Pass worked diligently with school officials to develop the concept for the Maverickville Minitropolis®. The fundamental goal of the IBC Bank’s Minitropolis® program is to help students gain an understanding of financial concepts while learning the value of leadership and responsibility that will set them up for success as adults.
Students earn money in which they can save and spend at local Maverickville businesses. Additional Maverickville business partners include IBC Bank, KINL / KEPS and the City of Eagle Pass.
