Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber wasted no time in registering as a candidate for re-election on the first day of candidate registration, Saturday, November 14, 2015, amidst a large group of supporters, wife, family, and friends at a local restaurant.
Sheriff Schmerber was elected in November 2012 by Maverick Countians in a hotly contested election against former Maverick County Sheriff Tomas S. Herrera, whom is expected to register as a candidate again for Sheriff.
Sheriff Schmerber emphasized the growth of the community and his leadership in providing a professional Maverick County Sheriff’s Department with integrity and respect for all citizens. He seeks re-election as Maverick County Sheriff for another four year term in the March 1, 2016 Democratic Party Primary Election and later in the November 1, 2016 Texas General Election.
During his tenure, Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber has been instrumental in establishing United States-Mexico cooperation among law enforcement agencies in locating missing persons in both countries, particularly between the State of Texas and State of Coahuila. Sheriff Schmerber also sponsored a Texas Border Sheriff Coalition and joint Texas-Coahuila Law Enforcement conferences in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Schmerber is a native Maverick Countian and the son of Santiago Schmerber and Martina Garay Schmerber. He attended local public schools and graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1971. He attended and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas.
Schmerber has served as a teacher with the Eagle Pass Independent School District, 26 years with the U.S. Border Patrol, and three years as Maverick County Sheriff.
Candidate registration continues until December 14, 2016 with the respective Maverick County Chairmans of the Democratic Party, Victor E. Perry, and Republican Party, Lowell McManus.
Early voting for the March 1, 2016 Primary Election starts on February 16, 2016 through February 26, 2016.
