The United Medical Centers Board of Directors hired former Maverick County Hospital District Ryan White HIV Program Director William Worrell as its new Chief Executive Officer to replace former longstanding CEO George Kypuros after interviewing several candidates for the position.
Worrell was introduced at a UMC Board of Directors meeting held on Monday, December 27, 2015 as well as to UMC Physicians, Professional and Administrative Staff. Worrell is scheduled to begin his new position as UMC CEO on Monday, January 4, 2016. Worrell tendered his resignation to the Maverick County Hospital District as its Ryan White HIV Program Director prior to accepting the UMC post.
Worrell worked several years at the Maverick County Hospital District as Director of its Ryan White HIV Program, which was acquired from UMC after having difficulties operating the program. Worrell also did a brief stint as Interim CEO of the Maverick County Hospital District during February 2014-May 2014 after the sudden and abrupt resignation of former CEO Elcira Bares. Terri Contreras-Patlan, former Chief Financial Officer at MCHD, was eventually hired as the local hospital district’s CEO by the Board.
Worrell recently completed the Leaders Across Borders Program with the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission. He received a Master of Healthcare Administration from Missouri State University in 2012; a Certificate in Radiographic Sciences from St. John’s School of Radiology in 2008; and a Bachelor of Science in Radiographic Sciences from Missouri State University in 2008.
According to Worrell’s Linkedin Page, he worked as a Radiologic Technologist and as a Radiology Instructor during 2008-2012 prior to joining the Maverick County Hospital District. He also worked as a Shift Manager and Delivery Driver at Papa John’s Pizza during 2005-2008; as an ER Radiologic Assistant during 2007-2008; and again as a Shift Manager and Delivery Driver with Breadneaux Pizza during 2004-2005. He graduated from Kirkwood High School.
Worrell will manage the UMC and its 12 clinics or service centers in the tri-county area of Maverick, Kinney, and Val Verde Counties with over 200 employees and approximately $25-30 Million operating budget. UMC is a federally funded community health center.
The UMC Board of Directors include Jose M. De Luna III, Dr. Hector Alvarez, Francisco Martinez III, Celestino Hernandez, Stephanie Alsup, Maria J. Martinez, Frank Mendoza, James Hoback, Helen Marie Jones, Margarita Andrade, and Gene Mireles.
