The newly realigned District 29-5A member high schools Athletic Directors have unaimously approved Corpus Christi Calallen High School Wildcats appeal to withdraw from the district at a February 2, 2016 meeting held in Floresville, Texas, subject to the UIL Executive Committee’s approval at a February 18, 2016 meeting, announced Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor.
Calallen immediately appealed to withdraw from the newly realigned District 29-5A due to the long travel distances and time and financial budgetary constraints caused by increased traveling costs. Alice High School Coyotes also signaled they intend to appeal as well for the same reasons, but there appeal was not considered at the February 2nd meeting due to Alice having an interim Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at the present moment. According to Winn’s Athletic Coordinator Eric Villasenor, Alice will submit their appeal through their Superintendent within the 10 days deadline allowed by UIL to appeal.
The final composition of District 29-5A for 2016-2018 will not be resolved until after February 18, 2016 when the UIL Executive Committee rules on Calallen and possibly Alice’s appeals.
Currently, District 29-5A for 2016-2016 is scheduled to include Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School, Alice High School, Corpus Christi Calallen High School, Floresville High School, San Antonio Harlandale High School, San Antonio McCollum High School, San Antonio Southside High School, and Uvalde High School.
Villasenor stated that the District 29-5A member high schools developed schedules for 2016-2017 based on two scenarios, one with Alice and Calallen remaining in the district and a second with Alice and Calallen not in the district. Villasenor stated that hopefully the final District 29-5A composition for 2016-2018 will be decided by the UIL Executive Committee on February 18, 2016 in Austin, Texas.
