Eagle Pass C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks Softball avenge earlier loss to McCollum 6-3 to capture San Antonio Harlandale Softball Tournament Championship

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks Softball Team won their first tournament championship in school history (ten years) on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Frank Tejeda Harlandale Independent School District Softball Tournament in San Antonio, Texas defeating San Antonio McCollum High School Cowgirls 6-3 in the championship game behind the right arm of standout Lady Mavericks pitcher Connie Hernandez, avenging an earlier tournament loss to the McCollum Cowgirls 12-3 during round robin play.
The Lady Mavericks rallied with five big runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a commanding 6-3 lead over the McCollum Cowgirls while Lady Mavericks hurler Connie Hernandez shut down the potent Cowgirls batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the Lady Mavericks Softball Program its first tournament championship in school history.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Mavericks batters exploded for five runs as standout Lady Maverick center fielder Alyssa Lopez belted a line drive double to center field to lead off the inning, standout Lady Maverick right fielder Monica Rodriguez reached base on a Cowgirl error advancing Alyssa Lopez to third base, standout Lady Maverick shortstop Cassandra Flores slammed an RBI double to center field scoring Alyssa Lopez to make the score 3-2 and advancing Monica Rodriguez to third base, standout Lady Maverick third baseman Daniela Rodriguez stroked a single to left field to score Monica Rodriguez to make tie the score 3-3 and advance Cassandra Flores to third base, standout Lady Maverick first baseman Yazmin Martinez belted a single to right field to score Cassandra Flores to go ahead 4-3 and advance Daniela Rodriguez to third base, the next two Lady Mavericks batters struck out and flied out to go down to the last out when standout Lady Maverick catcher Lorena Sanchez slammed a two RBI single to center field scoring Daniela Rodriguez and Yazmin Martinez to take a decisive 6-3 lead in the championship game.
The Lady Mavericks defense and solid pitching performance by Connie Hernandez blanked the Cowgirls in the bottom of the seventh inning to garner the tourney championship.
The 2016 C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks Softball Team includes Connie Hernandez, Lorena Sanchez, Yazmin Martinez, Cassandra Flores, Daniela Rodriguez, Lynet Gil, Alyssa Lopez, Monica Rodriguez, Marychelo Flores, Amberly Garza, Anissa Garcia, Brittany Perez, Giselle Cerda, and Jasmin Ballones.
The 2016 Lady Mavericks are under the direction of Head Softball Coach J. J. Iracheta, Jr. and Assistant Coaches Heriberto Roiz, Tony Martinez, Corina Benavides, and Johnny Hernandez.
