The Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees, employees, students, and parents recognized Mrs. Jessica Ramon, a fourth grade teacher at Armando Cerna Elementary, for her heroic acts which were instrumental in saving the life of a fourth grade student from her classroom on February 1, 2016.
Mrs. Ramon noticed that the female child was choking and assessed the situation and determined that what the child was choking on was a piece of food and had lodged itself in the child’s throat, blocking the child’s air passage.
The child’s face had begun to turn red and was having a hard time breathing, even gasping for air.
Mrs. Ramon quickly jumped into action and instructed students to go notify the school nurse and call 911.
Mrs. Ramon proceeded to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the student. At first, Mrs. Ramon was not able to get any type of response from the child as her arms began going limp, often times signs of blackout from lack of oxygen.
Mrs. Ramon persisted and continued performing the Heimlich Maneuver several more times and was able to assist the child in dislodging the food item from the child’s throat, restoring a clean/ unblocked airway for the child.
Mrs. Jessica Ramon’s quick thinking, past training, and heroic action saved a child’s life instead of the situation becoming a tragedy.
Mrs. Ramon is a retired U.S. military veteran and received training while in the military to perform the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR.
Eagle Pass Emergency Medical Technicians stated that Mrs. Ramon’s act of heroism contributed to a great positive outcome and saving a child’s life.
Students from the Armando Cerna Elementary, including representatives of the Student Council, presented Mrs. Jessica Ramon with the Super Hero Award for her heroic act in saving a student’s life.
“We appreciate what teachers do on a daily basis. We know they go above and beyond their duties and we thank you. “ said a Cerna Elementary student.
The EPISD School Board thanked Mrs. Ramon for her heroic efforts and acknowledged her by paying homage to her act of heroism.
The young female student whom Mrs. Ramon saved was also present and thanked her for her act of heroism.
The lesson to be learned from this act of heroism is that the Eagle Pass Independent School District should train all of its teachers, staff, and administrators in the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR. The local school district was fortunate that Mrs. Ramon received this training in the military.
The Eagle Pass Business Journal congratulates Mrs. Jessica Ramon for her for act of heroism and being a role model in our community.
