In the most hotly contested election in the March 1, 2016 Maverick County Democratic Party Primary, incumbent Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber swept challengers former Sheriff Tomas S. Herrera and retired Police Detective Johnny Munoz without the need of a runoff election, garnering 3,756 votes (53.74%) while Herrera received 2,157 votes (30.84%) and Munoz got 1,076 votes (15.40%).
Sheriff Schmerber now faces Republican Party nominee retired veteran Anthony Ramirez in the November 8, 2016 general election in his bid to win re-election for another four year term.
Many local political observers believed that the Sheriff race would go to a runoff, but Sheriff Schmerber surprised local politicos with a strong showing.
