RGC’s Professor Quiz Receives Regents’ Teacher Award
The Board of Regents of the Texas State University System, during their February meeting in Beaumont, bestowed the system’s prestigious Regents’ Teacher Award upon Dr. Fernando Quiz, professor of education at Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College.
Dr. Bill Kibler, President of Sul Ross State University, commented that Dr. Quiz has brought great honor to Sul Ross State University and particularly to the Rio Grande College. Kibler emphasized that the award honors “exceptional educators throughout the Texas State University System who have demonstrated outstanding performance in their roles as teachers, as evidenced by their dedication, skill, and knowledge of curriculum.”
Dr. Paul Sorrels, Vice President and Dean of Rio Grande College, explained the award is a lifetime designation bestowed by the Board of Regents upon faculty who have been acknowledged by their students, supervisors, and peers as exceptional. Sorrels stated, “Dr. Quiz has more than 15 years teaching at the Rio Grande College and during that time he has earned a reputation as a model classroom teacher committed to student success and completion.”
Dr. Quiz’s accomplishments include having been selected Teacher of the Year for the Rio Grande College six times. He has served as advisor to the Future Educators Club of the Rio Grande College. In the life of the civic community, Dr. Quiz has distinguished himself through his service as a trustee of the San Felipe-Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District, as a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of America, as an Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Del Rio, and as a graduate of the Leadership Texas Association of School Boards.
Dr. Jimmy Case, Provost of Sul Ross State University, commented, “Dr. Quiz’s life story resonates strongly and positively with the Sul Ross community. A former migrant from the Texas-Mexico Border region, Dr. Quiz’s life is an example to his students and colleagues of the transformational power of education. He is a model and mentor to Sul Ross students.”
