C.C. Winn HIgh School Mavericks Sweeps 2016 District 29-5A UIL Academic Championship for Second Consecutive Year
For the second consecutive year in a row, the thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks won the District 29-5A UIL Academic Sweepstakes Championship on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Laredo Martin High School in Laredo, Texas.
C.C. Winn High School will now advance to the Regional UIL Academic Championship on April 22nd at the University of Texas at San Antonio and be represented by 23 champions seeking to place to qualify for the State of Texas 5A UIL Academic Championship in Austin, Texas.
On April 2nd, C. C. Winn UIL Academic Team students competed at Laredo Martin High School in Laredo at the District 29-5A UIL Academic Sweepstakes Meet.
After almost eight hours of competing, the thundering Mavericks received first place, earning the coveted District 29-5A UIL Academic Sweepstakes Championship back to back.
Several academic subject teams from Winn won First Place Team Awards at the April 2nd District Meet, including the Journalism Team coached by Dionni Olivares-Wueste, the Mathematics Team coached by Patricia Flores-Martinez, the Speech Team coached by Randy Laurence, and the Computer Science Team coached by Jose Jimenez, Assistant UIL Coordinator.
In addition, the Spelling and Vocabulary Teams coached by Rey Rocha earned Second Place Awards at the District Meet.
Each team event that competed that day contributed a certain amount of points towards the Team Championship, truly making the overall Sweepstakes Championship a joint effort by Winn students who participated at the District Meet.
Other C. C. Winn team coaches participating at the District Meet include Sally Perez (Science), Cathy Mauldin (Social Studies), Selina Martinez (Accounting), Alejandra Cruz (Literary Criticism), Isidro Navarro (Current Events), Jesus Diaz (Computer Applications), Jose Munoz (Number Sense and Calculator Applications), Adolfo Flores (Prose and Poetry), and Winn UIL Head Coordinator and Ready Writing coach Angelica L. Camarillo. The students and their coaches spent countless hours preparing for the District Meet and their dedication paid off handsomely with a second consecutive District UIL Academic Sweepstakes Championship. “It took the effort of all coaches to get our students to place first in district,” UIL Coordinator Angelica > L. Camarillo said. “They all care about their teams and their progress,” added Camarillo.
The thundering Mavericks UIL Academic Team students worked extremely hard and focused on their events in winning the back to back championship, motivating them to work extra hard for the upcoming Regional Championship on April 22nd at UTSA. “Winning the 2016 District 29-5A UIL Academic Sweepstakes Championship has instilled confidence and poise to the talented and gifted Mavericks advancing to Regionals,” said Dionni Olivares-Wueste.
“We also have for the first time several teams advancing to Regionals and that also set a school record for Winn. That’s great and that shows how hard the kids have been working,” Cathy Mauldin said.
“Sweeping the District 29-5A UIL Academic Championship for the second consecutive year has earned recognition and respect for C. C. Winn High School and its students in the state as being gifted and talented scholars with great potential to contribute to society in the future,” said Principal Jesus Diaz-Wever. “All C. C. Winn Faculty, Administration, Staff, and students are extremely honored and excited of this prestigious achievement for the second consecutive year,” added Diaz-Wever.
“This accomplishment only reinforces what our faculty and staff have known all the time, that is, we have truly remarkable and exemplary students at C.C. Winn,” Angelica L. Camarillo said. “The C. C. Winn UIL Academic Teams thank Principal Jesus Diaz-Weaver and his administration and all of the dedicated faculty members who coach a team or contribute to the team,” Camarillo added. “We also want to thank the parents of our students for allowing them to participate and motivating them to succeed in all of their endeavors,” Camarillo added.
