Maverick Countians Attend Texas Campaign Symposium, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Discussed
(Press Release) On April 11 through April 13, 2016, Maverick Countians Rosy De Los Santos of the Office of Border Health Texas Department of State Health Services Health Service Region 8, Silvia Olivares of Southwest Border AHEC, and Marlen Ramirez of the Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) attended the Texas Campaign’s 5th Annual Symposium in Austin Texas, with the goal to learn more on resources to help promote healthier futures for our youth.
De Los Santos, Olivares, and Ramirez also met with Kelly L. Wilson, PhD, MCHES/Associate Professor from the Department of Health & Kinesiology at Texas A&M University, Sara Reeve, Graduate Research Assistant of the Department of Health & Kinesiology at Texas A&M University, Gwen Daverth, CEO/President of the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and David C. Wiley Ph.D., FASHA of Texas State University to discuss the implementation of a new project called Juntos Podemos.
Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) was awarded an Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program Grant by the Family & Youth Services Bureau to promote awareness on teen pregnancy prevention by educating our community’s youth on how to make healthier choices and ways for them to take care of themselves as well as our community. Maverick County has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in both the State of Texas and United States.
MCHD together with Border Health and Southwest Border AHEC will implement two certified curriculums within our community and surrounding counties with the goal to educate our youth on making healthier choices and teen pregnancy prevention.
