Retired Eagle Pass Police Department Detective Jose “Joe” Mendez arrested for theft by Texas Rangers

Eagle Pass Police Department Police Chief Alberto Guajardo announced that retired Eagle Pass Police Department Detective Jose “Joe” Mendez was arrested on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, for theft involving government funds over $2,500 by Texas Rangers as a result of a joint investigation by the Eagle Pass Police Department Detective Division and the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Division.
Mendez had just retired this year (2016) from the Eagle Pass Police Department. Mendez also recently ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for Maverick County Constable of Precinct 1 in the March 1, 2016 Texas Primary election. He also worked as a private security officer with a local security firm.
Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo stated that no person is above the law, including current or former law enforcement officers. All persons arrested for an alleged criminal offense are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court at law.
