State Representative Alfonso “Poncho” Nevárez Honored as “Border Champion”
(Press Release) Austin, TX — The Texas Border Prosecution Unit (BPU) has announced the selection of Texas State Representative Alfonso “Poncho” Nevárez of Eagle Pass for the “Border Champion” award. Representative Nevárez received the award and was recognized on Wednesday April 20, 2016 in Alpine during a BPU training to be held on the campus of Sul Ross State University.
“Representative Nevárez has been a strong, consistent and reasoned voice supporting our state’s efforts to secure the border and keep our communities and families safe,” said 49th Judicial District Attorney Isidro Alaniz (Laredo), current BPU chairman.
Fred Hernandez, District Attorney for the 63rd Judicial District (Del Rio) credits Representative Nevárez for making sure the Legislature recognizes the special needs of the border region. “Out here we can easily be forgotten, but Poncho constantly advocates on our behalf, supplying leadership in critical areas to find support for local law enforcement and prosecution activities,” said Hernandez.
The BPU is made up of 17 prosecutor jurisdictions covering 52 counties along the border region stretching from El Paso to Brownsville. Initially funded by the Legislature in 2009, the BPU supplies dedicated legal resources to state and local law enforcement agencies involved in border security operations, a “first of its kind” program unique to Texas among the southwestern border states.
