The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department announced that a 26 year old Eagle Pass, Texas man, Julio Cesar Martinez, committed suicide at approximately 3 P.M. on June 19, 2016, Father’s Day.
Family members of Martinez found him at his home and called 911 for emergency assistance. The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department and the Eagle Pass Fire Department EMS responded to the 911 call. Unfortunately, by the time the EMS personnel arrived at Martinez’s residence in Loma Bonita Subdivision, he was already deceased.
Martinez was a patient of a local mental health clinic in Eagle Pass.
Martinez is the third person to commit suicide in Maverick County during 2016. In April 2016, a young 16 year old C. C. Winn High School died in a San Antonio, Texas hospital from his injuries attempting to commit suicide while in May a 57 year old Eagle Pass man committed suicide by hanging at his residence at Fox Street.
According to the Eagle Pass Fire Department, approximately one person attempts to commit suicide or have suicide ideations per week in Maverick County.
A Maverick County Justice of the Peace was called to the scene to pronounce Julio Cesar Martinez dead and ordered an autopsy.
Suicides are the 10th largest cause of death in the United States. Recently, suicides in rural communities and counties in Texas have seen a significant increase while resources to assist people with mental health illnesses in these communities are limited or nonexistent.
