Eagle Pass C. C. Winn Mavericks trounce San Antonio Central Catholic Buttons 27-14

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks trounced the visiting San Antonio Central Catholic Preparstory Buttons 27-14 in a key non-district football game on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium, improving to 4-1 overall in the season.
The Central Catholic Buttons took the opening kick-off of the game but the thunder and lighting Mavericks defense forced them to punt.
The Mavericks struck first in the football game on their second possession after engineering a 75 yards touchdown drive, culminating in a 14 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julio Ruiz to standout tight end Jose Rodriguez and the point after attempt by place kicker Christian Rodriguez was good to give the Mavericks an early 7-0 lead over the Buttons with 2:34 minutes left in the first quarter.
The Buttons attempted a 27 yards field goal on their next possession but it was short and the Mavericks took over on downs at their 21 yard line. The Buttons defense stymied the potent Mavericks offense on this possession, forcing them to punt.
In the second quarter, the Buttons managed to score on a 94 yards drive, resulting in a two yard run by Buttons running back Austin Vargas and the extra point was good to tie the game at 7-7 each with 7:58 minutes left in the second stanza.
Shortly before halftime, the Mavericks offense clicked on all cylinders as standout quarterback Julio Ruiz threw a 19 yard touchdown pass to standout wide receiver Ruben Esquivel in the Buttons end zone and the point after attempt by place kicker Christian Rodriguez sailed left past the goal posts, giving the Mavericks a 13-7 lead with 28 seconds left in the second quarter. The Mavericks took the 13-7 lead into halftime.
The thundering Mavericks Marching Band and Silver Line Dance Team entertained the Maverick Nation football aficionados during halftime.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks thunder and lighting defense stifled the potent Buttons offense led by linebackers Alberto Duran and Ernesto Villasenor, defensive linemen Carlos Tijerina, Enrique Garza, and Jacob Guerra, and defensive backs Rene Auces, Alfonso Vallejo, Rey Vasquez, and Raul Gomez.
During the fourth quarter, the Mavericks explosive offense lit up the score board with two touchdowns, the first coming on a sensational 31 yard keeper by standout quarterback Julio Ruiz and the point after attempt by place kicker Norberto Barragan was good to extend the Mavericks lead 20-7 with 11:02 minutes in the fourth period and the second on a beautiful 33 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julio Ruiz to standout wide receiver Ruben Esquivel all alone in the Buttons end zone and the extras point by Norberto Barragan was good to give the Mavericks a comfortable 27-7 lead with 9:02 minutes left in the game.
The Central Cahtolic Buttons never gave up and managed to score a touchdown in the last seconds of the game on a four yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Nava to standout running back Austin Vargas and the point after attempt was good to close the scoring at 27-14 in favor of the Mavericks.
With the win, the Mavericks led by Head Caoch Eric Villasenor and stafff improve to 4-1 overall in the season and will be open this week before starting District 29-5A action against the San Antonio McCollum High School Cowboys on Friday, October 7, 2016, at 7:30 P.M. At the Harlandale Indpendent School District Frank Tejeda Football Stadium.
