Eagle Pass City Council approves new City Manager on a split vote, 4-1
The City of Eagle Pass, Texas City Council approved an offer of employment as City Manager to Arturo B. Rodriguez, an Assistant City Manager at the City of San Benito, Texas, at their regular meeting held on January 3, 2017 on a split vote of 4-1, culminating a long nine-month selection process to replace former City Manager Hector Chavez, Sr., who was arrested and indicted on April 15, 2016 by a federal grand jury in Del Rio, Texas for bribery involving a Maverick County Solid Waste Authority public construction contract.
Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu relinquished the Chair and stepped-down to personally make the motion to approve an offer of employment to Arturo B. Rodriguez as the new City Manager for the City of Eagle Pass and Mayor Pro-Tem Rudy Villalpando seconded the motion. After discussion on the motion, the Eagle Pass City Council approved the motion to offer employment as City Manager to Arturo B. Rodriguez on a split vote of 4-1 with Mayor Cantu, Mayor Pro-Tem Villalpando, Councilmember Gloria E. Hernandez, and Councilmember Luis E. Sifuentes voting in favor while Councilmember Yolanda P. Ramon voted against the motion.
The City of Eagle Pass and Arturo B. Rodriguez will commence negotiations on January 4, 2017 on an employment contract together with salary, benefits, and start date. Rodriguez is expected to start within 30-45 days as the new City Manager of the City of Eagle Pass after the successful negotiation of an employment agreement.
Interim City Manager Roberto Gonzalez will remain as City Manager until Rodriguez’s start date as the new Eagle Pass City Manager. Gonzalez has been Eagle Pass Interim City Manager since April 25, 2016, when the Eagle Pass City Council appointed him.
The three finalists considered and interviewed by the Eagle Pass City Council for the City Manager position included Arturo B. Rodriguez, Rudy Bowles of Eagle Pass, and Jesus Sanchez of Eagle Pass.
