BEDC Supporting Eagle Pass ISD
(Press Release) Eagle Pass ISD Superintendent Gilberto Gonzalez recently accepted to serve as the Chairman for the BEDC Labor Workforce & Training Committee. He was previously serving as the Vice-Chair for the committee, which was previously led by Terri Patlan-Contreras. Contreras had been serving as Chair since July and recently stepped down because of increased responsibilities at the Maverick County Hospital District.
Ronnie Rivera of the Middle Rio Grande Development Council will now serve as Vice-Chair for the committee. He had also been serving as a member of the BEDC Labor Workforce & Training Committee.
The BEDC, Eagle Pass ISD, Middle Rio Grande Development Council, and Workforce Solutions Middle Rio Grande have been working closely together for the last several months to provide creative ways to offer expended training opportunities for the local labor workforce. The BEDC hosted Texas Workforce Commissioner on Labor Julian Alvarez in October and was instrumental in introducing key TWC staff to the Eagle Pass ISD. During Commissioner Alvarez’s visit, he encouraged that all four groups work together when seeking State funding.
Shortly after Commissioner Alvarez’s visit, the BEDC organized a conference call between TWC’s Skills Development Grant Director, Workforce Solutions Middle Rio Grande, and the Eagle Pass ISD, to discuss grant funding opportunities.
As a result of the TWC conference call, Eagle Pass ISD will be seeking a TWC grant to offer its students technical training for cyber security, which is one of the country’s leading growing high-skills careers.
“I applaud Superintendent Gilberto Gonzalez for leading the way to offer our community’s students a very unique opportunity and exposure to a lucrative career in a much-needed industry,” says Eagle Pass City Manager Art Rodriguez.
Eagle Pass BEDC, Middle Rio Grande Development Council, Workforce Solutions Middle Rio Grande, and Eagle Pass ISD, jointly held two career fairs in September and October and have plans to continue to work on projects in 2018.
“I am very pleased that Eagle Pass is forming key collaborative efforts for the overall growth of our community and the entire region,” says Mayor Ramsey English Cantu.
