2018 Maverick County Junior Livestock Show and Sale Deemed A Success

The 2018 Maverick County Junior Livestock Show and Sale (MCJLS) held during January 24-27, 2018 at the Zan Matthies Showbarn at the Maverick County Lake in Eagle Pass, Texas expanded from three to four days and had over 300 Maverick County 4-H and Future Farmers of American (FFA) Exhibitors was deemed a great success, announced Tim Hardt, President of the MCJLS Association.
The 2018 MCJLS was dedicated to longtime Maverick County farmer and rancher, co-founder of the MCJLS, former President of the MCJLS, former Maverick County Deputy Sheriff, and U.S. Military Veteran Travis Kelly of Quemado, Texas for his unselfish dedication and support of Maverick County 4-H and FFA members.
The highlight of the 2018 MCJLS was the Sale held on Saturday, January 27th, with over 75 registered Buyers bidding on a total of 161 Animal projects presented by 4-H and FFA student members.
The Grand Champion Steer exhibited by 4-H member Olga Janel Ramos was purchased by Eagle Pass Attorney and State Representative Poncho Nevarez for $12,000 to set a positive precedent and tone at the 2018 MCJLS Sale on January 27th.
The Grand Champion Goat shown by FFA member Daniela Molina was purchased by Eagle Pass Entrepreneurs and Philanthropists Morris and Dora Libson and Family for $7,000.
The Grand Champion Lamb exhibited by FFA member Gerardo Molina was purchased by Pete Nuetze’s Minit Mart of Uvalde, Texas for $5,500.
The Grand Champion Hog shown by 4-H member Antonio De La Garza, III was purchased by a group of multiple buyers including the Chittim Ranch and the Chittim Chili Piquin Ranch for $6,000.
The Reserve Champion Steer exhibited by FFA member Juan de Dios was purchased by a group of multiple buyers including Dos Republicas Coal Partnership, North American Coal Corporation, and Camino Real Fuels, LLC for $10,000.
The Reserve Champion Goat shown by 4-H member Anahi Molina was purchased by a group of buyers including Texas Lone Star Title Company, LLC, La Cantera Real Estate, and Dr. Hector Alvarez for $8,000.
The Reserve Champion Lamb exhibited by FFA member Arturo Molina was purchased by H.E.B. of Eagle Pass for $7,000.
The Reserve Champion Hog shown by 4-H member Isabella De La Garza was purchased by Ancira Ford Mercury Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Eagle Pass for $8,500.
Auctioneer for the 2018 MCJLS Sale was Oscar San Miguel of Del Rio, Texas.
The estimated attendance during the four days of the 2018 MCJLS was over 10,000 persons.
The MCJLS Board of Directors include Tim Hardt, President; Frank Flores, Vice- President; Alma Chapa, Secretary; David Rodriguez, Treasurer; and Board Members Aleida Castillo, Joe Jimenez, and Fito Nava.
