Tejano Legendary Recording Artist Jimmy Gonzalez of Grupo Mazz Passes Away

Tejano legendary recording artist and Grammy Award winner Jimmy Gonzalez of Grupo Mazz passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at approximately 9:57 A.M. at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas from cardiac arrest.
Gonzalez had done a musical show at a city and was traveling back to Brownsville, Texas, where he resided, and stopped in San Antonio to visit family members when he became ill. Gonzalez suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated and transported to Methodist Hospital where he eventually passed away.
Gonzalez co-founded Grupo Mazz with former band vocalist Joe Lopez, but separated in 1998 when Gonzalez formed Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz while Joe Lopez formed Joe Lopez y La Nueva Imagen Mazz.
Gonzalez and Grupo Mazz won the Tejano Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2004 while also winning four Tejano Album of the Year Awards at the Latin Grammy Awards during 2001-2004. Gonzalez and Grupo Mazz also won countless of awards at the Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio.
Freddie Records of San Antonio, Texas Public Relations Manager Eloy Leija noted that Freddie Records had represented and distributed Jimmy Gonzalez and Grupo Mazz records and music for over 20 years. Leija stated that Tejano Music has lost a legend and a major force in Tejano Music in Jimmy Gonzalez.
Gonzalez’s funeral arrangements are pending in Brownsville, Texas.
