The Texas Senate District 19 Special Emergency Election is going down to the wire on regular Election Day on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, as eight candidates are vying to replace resigned State Senator Carlos Uresti.
The Early Voting Period for this special emergency election ended on Friday, July 17, 2018, but only the regular Election Day on July 31st remains for Maverick County registered voters to still cast their ballot in this salient political election to determine who will represent Maverick County and 16 other counties in the Texas Legislature.
Due to the awkward July 31st Election Date ordered by Texas Governor Gregg Abbot, voter turnout has been low among voters in the 17 County-wide Senate District 19, which is the largest geographical district in Texas stretching from Dimmitt County to Bexar County to Maverick County to West Texas and the Texas-Mexico border, including two key oil and gas fields-the Eagle Ford Shale and the Permian Basin.
The two leading candidates for Senate District 19 are Democrats Pete Gallego and Roland Gutierrez. Gallego is a former Congressman and State Representative that previously represented almost the same geographic and political territory as Senate District 19 while Gutierrez is a former City of San Antonio City Councilman and current State Representative. Other Democratic Party candidates include State Representative Tomas Uresti and Charles Urbina Jones.
Republicans are hoping that a low voter turnout in this Special Emergency Election will help their candidates to score a major upset and flip this Democratic Senate Seat to the Republican Party. Republican candidates seeking Senate District 19 include Jesse (Jay) Alaniz, Carlos Antonio Raymond, and Peter P. (Pete) Flores.
There is one Libertarian Party candidate, Tony Valdivia.
All Maverick County registered voters are encouraged to come out and vote on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at their Maverick County Precinct Polling Place from 7 A.M. through 7 P.M.
