Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks Volleyball 2018 Season in Full Swing

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks Volleyball Team’s 2018 Season is now in full swing with non-district and tournament games to prepare for District competition starting on August 28, 2018.
The 2018 Winn Lady Mavericks Volleyball Team includes Jazmin Fuentes, Angela Suke, Reyna De Los Santos, Jacqueline Leos, Jennifer Longoria, Thiana Reyes, Ariana Benavidez, Jasmin Ballones, Janell Camacho, Martha Garcia, Natalia Baltazar, Sophia Gonzalez, Jennifer Martinez, Ashley Fraga, Mia Medellin, and Andrea Aldape.
The Lady Mavericks are under the direction of Head Coach Corina Benavidez and Assistant Coaches Erika Rodriguez and Cynthia Salinas.
The Lady Mavericks opened the 2018 Season with a non-district win over Laredo Martin Lady Tigers on August 7th in a thrilling five set game at home, going 21-25, 25-14, 14-25, 25-19, and 15-8 (3-2). Leading the Lady Mavericks offensive attack was Reyna De Los Santos with 10 Kills, Sophia Gonzalez added 9 Kills, Jennifer Longoria had 6 Kills, and Martha Garcia had 16 Assists. On defense, Reyna De Los Santos had 5 Blocks and Angela Suke had 22 Digs, Jasmin Ballones had 15 Digs, and Martha Garcia had 14 Digs.
On their second game of the season, the Lady Mavericks fell in a tough non-district five set loss to the Crystal City Lady Javelinas on August 8th by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 14-25, and 11-15. Reyna De Los Santos had 17 Kills and 7 Blocks, Sophia Gonzalez had 9 Kills, Martha Garcia had 12 Assists and 6 Digs, Natalia Baltazar had 10 Assists, and Mia Medellin had 8 Assists and 4 Digs.
The Lady Mavericks traveled to San Antonio, Texas during August 9-11, 2018 to participate in the Edgewood Independent School District Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Mavericks went 4-4 at the Edgewood Tournament, falling to Young Women’s Leadership Academy in the Third Place game by the score of 23-25, 25-21, and 12-15. The Lady Mavs defeated the Sam Houston Lady Hurricanes in the first game by the score of 25-23, 24-26, and 15-13; crushed San Antonio Kennedy Lady Rockets by the score of 25-13 and 25-16; beat Hidalgo by the score of 25-14 and 25-23; lost to YWLA by score of 20-25 and 22-25; fell to San Antonio Memorial Lady Minutemen by score of 16-25 and 25-26; lost to Hondo Lady Owls by score of 16-25 and 16-25; and defeated Brooks by score of 25-8 and 25-11. Lady Maverick Martha Garcia was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding performance.
The Lady Mavericks traveled to Laredo, Texas on August 14th, and earned a key non-district win over the Laredo Cigarroa Lady Toros by the score of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-18. Jennifer Longoria and Sophia Gonzalez had 6 Kills each on offense, Reyna De Los Santos had 7 Blocks on defense, and Martha Garcia had 10 Assists with 2 Aces and 2 Digs.
The Lady Mavericks participated in the San Antonio Independent School District Volleyball Tournament during August 16-18, 2018, but game results were unavailable as of press time.
Head Coach Corina Benavidez stated the Lady Mavericks are gaining valuable experience and learning to play consistently throughout the whole match.
The Lady Mavericks play the Laredo St. Augustine Lady Knights on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Laredo, Texas in another non-district game and will then play in the Laredo United Independent School District Volleyball Tournament during August 23-25th in Laredo.
The Lady Mavericks open District play on Tuesday, August 28th, against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs at home with the Freshmen and Junior Varsity teams playing at 5 P.M. and Varsity at 6 P.M. at the Winn Gymnasium.
