Eagle Pass BEDC to hold Cross-Border Relations Reception on September 26th
(Press Release) The City of Eagle Pass Business & Economic Development Committee (BEDC) will hold a Cross-Border Relations Reception on September 26, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., at the IBC Community Suite in Eagle Pass.
BEDC Cross-Border Relations Chairman Ricardo Gonzalez is working with his team to invite key business representatives from Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras to participate in this reception. The reception will highlight the need for mutual support for economic development on both sides of the border.
On August 27, 2018, the Trump Administration announced that it was entering into a new U.S. /Mexico Trade Agreement, which would ultimately replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
NAFTA is a trilateral trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada that was launched on January 1, 1994.
Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu, who serves on various border and regional economic committees, including the Border Trade Alliance, is deeply aware of the local, regional, and statewide implications of trade agreements between the United State and Mexico.
“As the United States and Mexico enter into a new trade agreement, border communities must be aware of all changes that will impact us locally. It’s also important that border leaders work with our congressional leaders to ensure that our concerns and ideas are shared with the administration at the highest levels,” says Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu.
Last January the Eagle Pass BEDC and the Middle Rio Grande Development Council held a Regional Economic Development Forum with Congressman Will Hurd. During the forum, Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu and Piedras Negras Alcalde Sonia Villarreal, stressed the need for a spirt of cooperation between both countries.
“I am glad that we are bringing the business sectors from Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras together for this Cross-Border Relations Reception,” says BEDC Chairman Morris Libson. “As a businessman on both sides of the Rio Grande, I know that it’s absolutely vital that both counties and our respective communities have a continuous dialog, especially when it comes to economic development,” adds Libson.
