Eagle Pass Eagles Blank Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks 24-0 in 13th Annual City Football Championship

The mighty Eagle Pass High School Eagles blanked crosstown rival Eagle Pass Winn High School Mavericks 24-0 in the 13th Annual City Football Championship played on Friday, September 14, 2018, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium before a sell-out 6,000 football aficionados in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The two teams battled mano-a-mano for almost two complete quarters in a scoreless tie (0-0) in a defensive battle until 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter when the Eagles culminated a 52 yard touchdown drive on an eight yard TD run by running back Saul Peralez for the first score of the game and placekicker David Lopez added the point after to make it 7-0 in favor of the Eagles.
In the ensuing kickoff, the Mavericks kickoff returnman allowed the football to bounce in front of him allowing the charging Eagles kickoff team to pounce on the loose football as Armando De Los Santos recovered the kickoff fumble at the Mavericks 13 yard line with 46 seconds remaining in the second quarter, giving the Eagles the opportunity to score again within a minute just seconds before halftime. The stampeding Mavericks defense played the potent Eagles offense well almost denying them a second score before halftime, but eventually the Eagles offense muscled a one yard touchdown dive by running back Jose Hernandez into the Mavericks end zone with one second remaining before halftime and placekicker David Lopez added the extra point to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead at halftime, which the Eagles did not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Early in the third quarter, Eagles standout linebacker David Kypuros blocked a Mavericks punt and personally recovered it at the Mavericks six yard line with 6:15 minutes remaining in the third quarter, setting the Eagles with excellent field position at the Mavericks six yard line and first and goal. In the following play, Eagles running back J. Herrera scampered for a six yard touchdown run with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter and placekicker David Lopez added the point after attempt to give the Eagles a commanding 21-0 lead.
The Eagles tallied the final points of the game in the fourth quarter on a 28 yard field goal by Eagle placekicker David Lopez to close the scoring 24-0 with 6:16 minutes remaining in the game. The Eagles Land Shark Defense stifled the explosive Mavericks offensive machine throughout the game to keep the Mavs from getting on the scoreboard.
The Eagles win their 13th annual consecutive City Football Championship over the Mavericks and improve to 3-0 in the season while the Mavericks sustain their first loss of the season to go 2-1 in the season.
