Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Shut Out Crystal City Javelinas 21-0 in 2018 Football Season Opener

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks shut out the pesky Crystal City High School Javelinas 21-0 in the 2018 Football Season Opener at the Crystal City Independent School District Stadium in Crystal City, Texas on Friday, August 31, 2018.
The Mavericks stampeding offense scored three touchdowns against the Javelinas stout defense and narrowly missed scoring a fourth touchdown stranding the football at the goal line.
The Mavericks Silver and Black Defense stuffed the potent Javelinas offense throughout the game to preserve the hard fought and earned 21-0 non-district game victory, giving the Mavericks a great start in the 2018 Season with a 1-0 record.
The Mavericks avenged last year’s upset loss at the hands of the Javelinas at home with the season opening win on Friday, August 31st.
In the first quarter, both the Mavericks and Javelinas exchanged several possessions as the defenses controlled the game. The Mavericks stampeding defense composed of defensive tackles Alejandro Ontiveros, Alexis Ontiveros, defensive ends Jose Hinojosa, Ricardo Morales, linebackers Patricio Hernandez, Alex Garcia, and Miguel De Los Santos, and defensive backs Domingo Duran, Azael Rodriguez, Hector Nunez, German Velasquez, and Gilberto Vazquez dominated the potent Javelinas offense throughout the entire game, limiting the Javelinas to less than 100 offensive yards.
The Mavericks offense composed of quarterback Ethan Johnston, running backs Marc Cardenas, Fernando Zapata, offensive linemen Daniel Ruiz, Adrian Munoz, Juan Guerra, Cesar Valdez, Jaime Rodriguez, and wide receivers Jose Blanco, Ernesto Vazquez, Jared Roiz, and Raul Solis scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a four yard scamper by quarterback Ethan Johnston after a long drive and placekicker Ernesto Fuentes added the point after attempt to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead over the Javelinas. The Mavericks took a 7-0 lead into Halftime.
The thundering Winn Mavericks Marching Band together with the Silver Line Dance Team entertained both the Javelinas and Mavericks aficionados during Halftime.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks offense orchestrated a drive against the Javelinas defense that culminated in a six yard touchdown run by quarterback Ethan Johnston and kicker Ernesto Fuentes added the point after attempt to extend the Mavericks lead 14-0 over the homestanding Javelinas.
The Mavericks stampeding defense dominated the potent Javelinas offense during the second half of the game to shut them out from scoring.
The Mavericks offense added a third touchdown in the fourth quarter after a long drive resulting in a two yard dive into the Javelinas end zone by quarterback Ethan Johnston, his third TD of the game, while kicker Ernesto Fuentes added the extra point to give the Mavericks a commanding 21-0 lead over the Javelinas.
The Mavericks earned a hard fought victory over the never say die Javelinas to start the season 1-0.
The Mavericks next face the Uvalde High School Coyotes in a non-district game at home on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 7:30 PM at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. This game has been designated as the Mavericks Parents Night with festivities starting at 6:30 PM.
