2019 Maverick County Junior Livestock Show Sale Sets $477K Record

The 2019 Maverick County Junior Livestock Show (MCJLS) Sale set a new record in total sales of approximately $477,00 or more on Saturday, January 26, 2019, as 160 animals were sold at auction to the highest bidders, surpassing the previous record established at the 2018 MCJLS Sale, announced Tim Hardt, Board President of the Maverick County Junior Livestock Show Association.
Over 300 Maverick County 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) exhibited animal projects in the 2019 MCJLS, which 160 of these animals participated in the MCJLS Sale on January 26th.
Taking top honors at the 2019 MCJLS Sale was Janel Ramos with her Grand Champion Steer named “Oakley” weighing in at 1,154 pounds purchased for $14,000 by Eagle Pass attorney and State Representative Alfonso “Poncho” Nevarez of the Nevarez Law Firm, followed by Orlando Molina’s Grand Champion Lamb selling for $10,500 to Eagle Pass western wear and boots retailer Danny Farhat of Danny’s Western Wear, followed by Alyssa Duran’s Grand Champion Hog which sold for a record price and top seller of $21,000 paid by the Rodriguez Law Firm, and Samantha Molina’s Grand Champion Goat sold for $9,000 to Pete Neutze’s Minit Mart of Uvalde, Texas.
Robert Medina’s Reserve Grand Champion Steer sold for $6,500 to local attorney Earl Herring of the Herring Law Firm and the law firm of Weinberg and Weinberg, followed by Jose Samaniego’s Reserve Grand Champion Lamb sold for $7,000 to local auto dealer Ancira Eagle Pass Automotive, followed by Sophia Rodriguez’s Reserve Grand Champion Hog selling for $7,500 to IBC Bank-Eagle Pass, and Daniela Molina’s Reserve Grand Champion Goat sold for $6,500 to Pete Neutze’s Minit Mart of Uvalde, Texas.
The 2019 MCJLS was dedicated to the dynamic trio set of brothers, Armando, Luis, and Jose De La Cruz, who have selflessly volunteered hundreds of hours and their expertise in agriculture and animal husbandry to the youths of Maverick County and the MCJLS during many years.
The Auctioneer for the 2019 MCJLS Sale was Oscar San Miguel and the competition judges included Matt Posey for Steers and Hogs, Wayne Morris for Lambs and Goats, Francis Nelson for Showmanship, and Ritchie Griffin for Sift, Rabbits, Poultry, and Breeding categories.
The 2019 MCJLS Sale was produced and sponsored by the MCJLS Association Board of Directors, including Tim Hardt, President, Armando De La Cruz, Vice-President, Ivy Purcell, Secretary, David Rodriguez, Treasurer, and Board Members Joe Jimenez, Frank Flores, and Fito Nava.
“The 2019 MCJLS Sale was a tremendous success due to local and out of town businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals participation as Buyers for the animals exhibited and sold at the show as well as all the volunteers who assisted in one form or fashion during the two-weeks of events,” President Tim Hardt said. “Most importantly, the beneficiaries of the 2019 MCJLS Sale are our local 4-H and FFA members who gained valuable lessons in life and leadership as a result of their participation,” added Hardt.
