Eagle Passan Jose “Pepito”Antonio Perez Passes Away at Age 73

Maverick Countians mourn the passing of native Eagle Passan Jose Antonio Perez , age 73, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas.
Jose Antonio Perez was born on April 16, 1945 in Eagle Pass, Texas to Alicia Calderon de Perez and Jose Maria Perez.
Perez attended Eagle Pass public schools and graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1963. He attended Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History and a minor in Spanish after serving in the United States military.
Perez served in the United States Army during the 1960s during the Vietnam War era. Upon returning from his military service, he enrolled in college and obtained his college degree.
Upon graduating from college, Perez worked for Union Pacific Railroad for over 20 years and retired from railroad work.
Perez is survived by his wife, Maria de la Luz Cordova de Perez, two sons, Carlos Gilberto Perez of San Antonio (Sandra Hernandez) and Jose Armando Perez of Eagle Pass (Alicia), one daughter, Julissa Graciela Perez de Romero of Dallas (Jesse Romero), three granddaughters, Amanda Perez, and Victoria and Camila Romero, and one grandson, Noah Romero, two brothers, Ricardo A. Perez and Julio R. Perez, and two sisters, Rosa Maria Perez de Garza and Olga P. Perez. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alicia Calderon de Perez and Jose Maria Perez, and two sisters, Diana Perez and Alicia Perez de Recalde.
He was affectionately given the nickname “Pepito” by his family and friends since a young child. He loved his family dearly. He enjoyed his son, Jose Armando Perez, bar-b-que cooking. He was a good son, brother, and loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was a very giving and caring person. He was big on all students obtaining an education, including his children. He paid for all of his children’s education and advised them to pursue advanced degrees like a Master’s degree, which all his children successfully obtained. He enjoyed being gregarious and warm with family and friends, always hugging and kissing his loved ones. He enjoyed participating and planning for his daughter’s wedding, went shopping with her for her wedding dress, and attended her bridal and baby showers. He was proud of his military service to the United States and later becam a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He made sure his children had everything they needed to succeed in education and life. He enjoyed visiting his aunts and uncles and reminiscing about the good old days and family history. He always had a full tank of gas in his car and often volunteered to give his family members and friends a ride to the store, doctor’s office, to Piedras Negras, or take them for a ride around town. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and Maverick Countians.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019, from 11 A.M. to 9 P.M. with a Rosary at 7:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 1:30 P.M. at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Eagle Pass and followed by interment at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Cemetery with full U.S. military honors.
