Eagle Pass Lady Eagles Defeat Del Rio Queens 5-2 to remain undefeated in District 29-6A Play

The mighty Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles Softball Team defeated arch-rival Del Rio High School Queens 5-2 in a clash between the two previously undefeated District 29-6A teams on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Student Activity Center Softball Field.
The Lady Eagles take sole possession of first place in District 29-6A with the win with a 6-0 record while the Del Rio Queens fall to second place with a 5-1 District mark as the teams enter the second round of District play on Friday, March 29, 2019.
A large crowd attended the game between the Lady Eagles and Del Rio Queens that had a feeling of a playoff game between these two storied teams.
The game was a pitchers duel between Lady Eagle Katie Galvan and Queen Alyssa Gonzalez. The Lady Eagles opened the scoring in the game on the bottom of the third inning as Alyssa Lopez led off with a double to left field and a sacrifice bunt advanced Lopez to third base and scored on a bad throw from the Queen catcher to pitcher Gonzalez.
The game remained close 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Eagles exploded for two runs with two outs as Isabel Martinez was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Katie Galvan legged out an infield hit and stole second base while advancing Martinez to third base, and Leslie Martinez slammed a two RBI double to the left field fence to score Martinez and Galvan’s courtesy runner Emily Rodriguez.
The Lady Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead over the Queens as Alex Martinez led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch, Lorelei Morales belted an RBI single to left field to score Martinez, Kaylene Ruiz was hit by a pitch advancing Morales to second base, LaShay Reyes executed a perfect sacrifice bunt advancing Morales to third base and Ruiz to second base, and Morales scored on a wild pitch by Queens pitcher Gonzalez.
The Del Rio Queens averted a shut out by belting two back to back home runs with two outs off of Lady Eagle hurler Katie Galvan, who regained her composure to close the game and earn the hard fought victory over the Queens by a final score of 5-2.
Lady Eagle hurler Katie Galvan limited the potent Del Rio Queens’ hitters to only five hits while striking out six and keeping the Queens scoreless until the top of the seventh inning.
The Lady Eagles had a total of six hits, including Leslie Martinez going 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs, Alex Martinez went 1 for 3 with a double and one run scored, Lorelei Morales batted 1 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored, LaShay Reyes went 1 for 3, Alyssa Lopez batted 1 for 3 with a double and one run scored, and Katie Galvan went 1 for three and one run scored.
The Lady Eagles next play the Laredo United Lady Longhorns on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 7 P.M. at the EPISD Student Activity Center Softball Field in Eagle Pass.
