While the Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles and Harlingen South High School Lady Hawks were scheduled to play a best of three series in the 2019 UIL Region IV-6A Area Championship, Mother Nature did not cooperate as inclement weather cancelled Game 1 on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Sinton High School Softball Field in Sinton, Texas, forcing both teams to reschedule and agree to a one game playoff on Saturday, May 4th at Corpus Christi Independent School District Cabaniss Field.
The reigning District 29-6A and Bi-District Champions Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and loyal Eagle Nation aficionados traveled from Sinton to Corpus Christi to tackle the potent Harlingen South Lady Hawks in a winner take all one game playoff for the Area Championship.
The Lady Eagles exploded for four runs in the first inning to take an early 4-1 lead in the game.
In the third inning, the Lady Eagles held a 5-3 lead over the Lady Hawks. However, the Lady Hawks rallied with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead over the Lady Eagles.
In the sixth inning, standout Lady Eagle catcher Brooke Diaz belted a towering home run with a base runner on second base and one out to apparently tie the ballgame at 8-8, but the base umpire called the Lady Eagle base runner on second base out for leaving base early for the second out of the inning and negating Diaz’s game tying home run. On the ensuing pitch, Diaz hit a fly ball to the outfield for the third out with the score still 8-6 in favor of the Lady Hawks.
The Lady Eagles valiantly battled until the final at bat in the seventh inning, but were unable to tie or win the game, falling to the Lady Hawks in a thrilling playoff game by the final score of 8-6.
The Lady Eagles enjoyed a great season in 2019 having won both the District 29-6A Championship with an undefeated record of 12-0 and the Bi-District Championship against the La Joya High School Lady Coyotes.
The Eagle Pass Business Journal congratulates the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles on their outstanding season and accomplishments as well as wishes all the players the best in their future academic, athletic, and life endeavors. Go Lady Eagles!
